Why is Jesus So Strict About Divorce?

I am concerned about the deterioration of families in our culture, beginning with the deterioration of marriages. Not only is it disastrous for a society, it brings a great sorrow in many people’s lives.

This social science graph shows the rise of divorce and the decline of marriage over 150 years.

I grew up in a pronounced time of great deterioration of marriage in the culture, which I document in the beginning of this sermon. Going through the Sermon on the Mount, we came, on this February morning in 2026, to this sad subject of divorce. Jesus, by bringing it up, is asking us to face it, but He does so for a reason. Jesus’ seriousness about the consequences of divorce, the strong words of this passage, Matthew 5:31-32, are helpful for us to contemplate, as it opens up for us the meaning of marriage.

Listening to this meaning can help one understand why I make the plea I do in the sermon. And why I reveal a secret about what happens when my wife and I do marriage counseling….
