Wearing Your Culture into Worship

This May, 2006 two-part message delivers the important ideas of my exegesis of the 1Corinthians 11 head-covering passage, Paul’s foundational treatment of gender through his reading of Moses. This expository work shaped the book, enGendered. The sermon is information heavy, and thought-heavy, but I thought it necessary to explain at least some of the main features of these weighty words, even dividing it into two. The words require involved thought.

For example, it is impossible to understand the famous passage without seeing the large role of cultural engagement in it. In fact, the passage exemplifies how Christians should engage their culture. This makes it of immense value for us. So I spend Part 1 discussing how gender interacts with our culture.

The sermon also explains how I was incorporating the voice of women in my pastoring. I offer one way, at least, of ensuring the presence of woman’s voice in a church tradition like my own that puts forward man to lead. Part II takes up the deeper implications.
