Send out the Young Women to Speak Loudly

Last week the Taliban announced that women may not speak in public in Afghanistan. This law, somewhat shocking to our ears, is not so outrageous if you are seeking to follow the logic of the Koran. This is why the leaders implementing the law cite Islamic Sharia to justify it.

But contrast this with the Bible. In Proverbs 9, Woman Wisdom makes her home quite public and speaks loudly from “the highest places in the town:”

1 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars.

2 She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table.

3 She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town,

4 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!…”

If we read v3 closely, we should notice that we are not listening to just one esteemed woman. The lady sends out many young women to proclaim her wholesome welcome.

Now, you might think, this does not describe something actually happening. Rather, Proverbs gives us an extended metaphor, making the Wisdom of God into a person for the Solomonic youth to desire. But the metaphor provides us with interesting cultural commentary. We tend to have the mistaken impression that Biblical women were to be seen and not heard. But for this verse to make sense to its tenth century BC audience, it must have been that women’s voices were heard in the highest places of the town. Unlike the Muslim ban, Biblical women are welcomed to speak. In fact, their voices, when bringing the dictates of Wisdom, are considered necessary.

It is all the more striking that Jesus Christ identifies with this Woman Wisdom in chapter 11 of the Gospel of Matthew. In the plan of salvation Christ is the wisdom of God, powering the mission, getting it done. Without this wisdom, we are lost.

Where is Woman Wisdom sending out her maidens today? It is in the area of gender. Many now, such as, to name a few, Patty Height, Lisa Garcia, Christie May Jesse, Ally Kutz, Sarah Sedgwick, Linda Seiler, Kathy Grace Duncan, and of course, Rosaria, are boldly proclaiming the truth about gender. They speak in the highest places in the town, that is, YouTube. Each of these former lesbians have a unique story, and, I mean, truly unique. I invite you, through each of the above links, to watch and listen to them. Note with me how, beside than their fascinating testimonies, they share great wisdom. Listen closely. It should be clear, hearkening to each of them, that we need to hear what they are saying. God has sent them out to the high places.

Good to know that, at least here in the West, Wisdom is still sending out Her handmaidens to speak Her welcome loudly to the youth of the town, to the simple who may listen.
