A puzzling passage.
Though this message on Mark 1:35-45 (12/01/2002) may not seem to be directly about gender, I include it in The Marriage Files series because, very often, an intergendered relationship needs to deal with this difference. (We certainly have had this conflict in our marriage.) Wherever you fall on this spectrum of compassion vs. competence, very often your partner helps you appreciate your strength and address your weakness.
Overall, this passage helps us see how good Jesus is.
Below are the small group questions we used to engage with the sermon:
- Which type of person are you more like:
- a. THE COMPASSIONATE, interrupt-able person who has more trouble getting things done
or
- THE COMPETENT, reliable person who can focus on accomplishing a goal, but sometimes at the expense of peoples’ needs?
- Mark says that Jesus had compassion for the leper. Why do you think Jesus yelled at him?
- Have you ever tried to keep secret a life-changing event for the sake of another? How did that go? Can you understand the healed leper disobeying Jesus?
- What happened when the til-recently-leper started talking? Was this what Jesus wanted?
- How does Jesus combine the best of our tendencies?
- How does this help to change you?
