The loss of sex polarity is part and parcel of the larger disintegration, the reflex of the soul’s death, and coincident with the disappearance of great men, great deeds, great causes.
–Henry Miller
On this Father’s Day, it is good to turn the focus on men and manhood. So, here is a message from way back when (4/26/2015), when we asked the question, “What is a man?”
I should note that there is an error in the sermon. I claim that the exhortation of Ephesians 5:22 (the sermon is on Ephesians 5:22-33) is the only New Testament application of Jesus’ description of what He was doing (laying down His life) for us in John 15:13. But this is incorrect. John himself generalizes Jesus’ words in 1John 3:16, saying that we Christians also should do this for one another. However, it remains the case that Paul, in the letter to the Ephesians, singles out husbands for this action for their wives. What does this tell us?

The Bible brings such challenging clarity to this question of real manhood, by speaking about gender in terms of relationship and explaining what it really means to be in charge.
