Here is a different perspective on the Christmas story of Luke 1:39-52 (interpreted through the Old Testament prescient anticipation of Mother Mary in Judges 5:23-27).
Both Jael and Mary (as well as their promoters, Deborah and Elizabeth) understood that they were in a war of great consequence. Both are willing to meet the fight when it comes to their tent door. And both receive God’s Kingdom coming as their story and so become famed as a “Woman among Women.”
This message comes from a time (you can tell) when a new tide was coming in as third wave feminism was winning out (2013).
In a way, women of God do need to be a type of warrior. Maybe not the type fantasized about in the current media presentations, maybe not usually as front-line combatants in the military, but fighters strong and courageous nonetheless.
Let’s recognize, this Christmas, that we can celebrate the coming of the Christ because, on the human side, these women had a marshal mindset. What a gift that came through woman.
