The question, ‘When to Divorce?’, doesn’t seem to get old. This sermon addressed a time (February, 2026) when no-fault divorce legislation was being considered and debated in NYC. This debate, I point out, was a hot topic 2,000 years before, when Jesus takes it up.
It was a dangerous subject for Jesus to speak out about, given the time and place, but we can be thankful that He did. This message shows how Jesus does ethics, giving us a deep reason for the seriousness of marriage and its potential dissolution. In the process of following Him in preaching that, I am laying the exegetical foundation for the importance of gender in marriage.
Also in it, I review a sad movie about divorce that had just come out at the time, The Squid and the Whale.
But, of course, the Christian message ends in hope.
