Many years ago, I introduced the notion in my preaching that in marital covenant lovemaking, we are imitating, and are to imitate, God. Even though God does not have a body as we do, all the Creator has made reflects Him (Psalm 19:1-6), especially in us (Genesis 1:26, 28). We are God’s image splayed out in space and time. Our intimacy mirrors, in a toy way, something about God’s intimacy. We are getting at something in carrying out that part of the marriage relationship.
This (mostly captured) early sermon (June, 2003) on Ephesians 5:1-5, in its call to imitate, introduces how Covenant Lovemaking is so given to help us understand God.
Some questions to ponder as you listen:
- Do I fail to view physical intimacy as less than the lofty gift that it is? Do I view sex as something dirty?
- Does God belong in the bedroom?
- What stands out from the things I am hearing about physical intimacy?
- How might married Christians imitate God in their love-making?
- What comfort is there for those who are not yet given this gift, or who have had it taken away?

I make reference near the end to how Mary K. was coming because, back then, we had not found a place to live in NYC yet, so we were not able to be live together. It was a great reunion when she finally arrived…

Sam, thanks for this. I look forward to listening. I hope you and Mary K. are doing well in the new chapter you’re in. BTW, are there any other channels I can access your old sermons? I think the one site that was up that had your Greenwich Village sermons in it is now down. Take care, brother. Ted
Hi Ted, thanks for asking. Yes, for those who can stand to hear more, all previous sermons (that is, that got recorded) are now available at the Remembering-the-Village-Church website (https://villagechurchnyc.com). This site (yes, it is active) now includes sermons from all the places I preached regularly (the Village Church, Faith Church, Iron Works, Grace and Peace) and are searchable by Scripture or topical series. You should be able to access it…
You are so bold Sir! Don’t you know people don’t talk about this in church :-). Thanks for being brave…. Sharing the truth that sets people free!!
Thank you, Jane. When taking the pulpit, my rule is: If the Bible talks about it, I should too.
